The SiloReal case: the need exists and that's why it's growing rapidly in Argentina and Brazil

Jan 22, 2024

The company SiloReal, which has a presence in Brazil and Argentina, provides real-time monitoring services for silo bags where producers usually store their grains directly in the field. In its 2023 balance, the startup reported that it has already managed to connect more than a million tons of grains, when its goal was to reach 600 thousand tons. This shows the need for producers to have their grain stock under control.

The CEO of the company, Delfín Uranga, also revealed that the company managed to attract around 2 million dollars in financing from investors in both countries. This will allow it to expand throughout the entire region, accompanied by important agricultural groups such as Lartirigoyen, Xperiment, Draper Cygnus, among others. Likewise, it added more than 50 clients throughout the year and increased the number of monitored establishments in the country to 220.

“Throughout last year, we focused on expanding our client portfolio and encouraging the recurrent use of the platform with large production companies such as Espartina, Bioceres, MSU, as well as small and medium producers. In addition, we incorporated new clients located in the province of Buenos Aires, Salta, Tucumán, Santiago del Estero, Chaco, and the northern area of Santa Fe,” said Uranga.

But what does connecting stored grains in silo bags consist of? The work is based on obtaining digitized information through sensors with the aim of keeping track of the useful life of the silo bag and knowing the condition of the grains stored inside. The system even allows receiving real-time alerts about threats.

For this, each silo bag is assigned an identity, becoming unique, visible, and traceable. In this way, producers have documentation that is assigned during the assembly process and is what is known as proof of initial existence. From that moment on, each georeferenced silo bag has a unique ID.

In 2023, the company was able to develop other products and add value to its services. “SiloID and SiloSat were born because we already had the SiloMetrix product. Today we have a much more complete platform. The first layer is to give identity to that silo bag in the field, then certification of existence by satellite or status by telemetry. The birth of SiloID has been very important because we went from 200 thousand tons to 1 million, therefore I consider it a milestone because it allowed us to scale 5 times in just 6 months,” said Uranga.

In the case of Brazil, the goals are much more ambitious, as the entrepreneur explained, and this is because the industry in the neighboring country “is much larger, demanding, and with great references.”

“The storage problem is very serious since it has an average of 300 million tons of production and 100 million tons of storage capacity, and we are here to solve the difficulty of 200 million tons that require temporary storage. Our solution not only facilitates the management of that asset but also provides access to liquidity. Therefore, we must prepare the platform for exponential growth in 2024 with already validated products, incorporate other invisible real assets, and expand to other countries,” he indicated.
